Where the river runs...
2015 international garden Expo - Wuhan, China
This earth dominated, curvaceous design was, believe it or not, inspired by another natural element; water. The creator of this interesting piece, Penda Architecture and design, took in fact water and our relationship and necessity for it as the main theme for the 2015 Garden Expo in Wuhan, to underline the importance and preservation of clean water, for the city, having an important relationship with the Yangtze River, as well as individuals and citizens.
The pathway, composed by narrows, high cliffs and natural caves becomes interactive thanks to the initiative to encourage visitors to plant given seeds, contributing to the altering, changing and transformation of the landscape, in a positive way. This ultimately leads to a plaza, where visitors can reflect and relax in the greenery.
I find myself being particularly inspired by high grasslands; for me they give an unpredictable as well as calming feeling to a site and in combination to a fun, inconsistent paths, it truly creates an intriguing place to visit, both for adults and kids.
Not entirely sure how this design approach can be applied to the site of Blackfriars, however I'm very interested in considering different levels in a path, and definitely plenty of grassland areas to create, almost ''private'' little spaces.
