eyes of the skin- reflections and thoughts
By Juhani Pallasmaa,'' the eyes of the skin'' is one of those readers that I wish I read sooner. Particularly because I based my second year design project on the same subject that he writes about; the five sense and the important role they play when designing in 4D.
As spatial designers, we have to consider a lot of the visual elements in a landscape, but the gustatory, olfactory and haptic elements are as important and all contribute to the overall experience. Throughout the reader, I came across to a lot of interesting and precise description of this phenomena such as '' The body is enriched by both memory and dream, past and future'' which highlights the permanent impact of sensorial experiences, the intricacy of our human body and subconciuos.
As mentioned earlier, I previously explored this topic but I wish I read more about the importance of the senses in architecture and what they mean conceptually. Sense scape was a public realm dedicated to the senses, but I'm starting to think that the sense almost always collectively work together and it's hard to separate them, so how can I have an area that only focuses on the taste for example? A foodhall is going to be noisy and busy, therefore there's always that auditory element. Overall I was pleased with how it turned out, however I wish I described my intent more adequately, perhaps reading more research material is needed.
