Diana, princess of Wales Memorial by Kathryn Gustafson
The Diana, princess of Wales memorial in Hyde Park, London, is a landscape design by Kathryn Gustafson in memory of the royal, that resembles a shallow ring. The concept for the design was taken as inspiration from the qualities of the beloved Princess '' reaching out and letting in'', with the functional scope of attracting people in ,as well as radiating energy through the trickling water within the sculpture.
The fountain, made of Cornish granite, creates beautiful reflective basin using the topography of the land, alongside water jets that bring the water to life. The element of water brings visitors to stop at the site and relax and enjoy a minimalistic yet interactive design.
The concept of this design is certainly what made me have a deeper read into this project. It's interesting how they reflected qualities of a person's character into a physical landscape, creating a sweet, poetic and symbolic message that represents in fact the Princess. I'm also intrigued by the minimalistic choice of design for Hyde Park that pushes the boundaries of Landscape Architecture in the UK. Perhaps the idea of ''pushing the boundaries'' to create something different also links to the original concept, to reflect that the Princess of Wales was often seen as different and daring.
