This weeks material; Stone
Stone is this week's material for sustainable technology, a material that I was yet again not very comfortable with. I found it difficult to distinguish between types of stones..particularly lime stone and sandstone. The difference apparently is that Sandstone is more grainy as it derives from quarz, whereas Limestone is more soft to the touch.
Stone is by far the most interesting material studied.. its fascinating to think how it was one of the first materials to be discovered and to be used, the evolution of it from ancient roman and greek towers to modern decorative walls in the middle of cities.
Just like bricks, the different type of courses define the overall look of a wall. I'm personally drawn to a rubble course, perhaps because the random displacement of different stone sizes gives us the illusion of it to be natural.
