SUPERKILEN PROJECT - the red square
Norrebo,Copenhagen- Denmark
Superkilen is a kilometer long park in the district of Norrebo, Copenhagen, designed with the intent to promote tolerance and unity, bringing refugees and locals together in one of the most ethinically diverse and socially challenged community of the capital.
The project, created by BIG Architects, landscape architecture studio topotek1 and artist collective superflex, consists in three sections: the red square, the black square and the green square.
Each square brings a diverse atmospheres and different elements to the district, designed around the inhabitants and the strong community, representing it through objects that have been designed previously around parts of the world from swings from Iraq, benches from Brazil to little details such as manholes covers from Zanzibar.
The reason why I find this design interesting is less about the aesthetic but more about the concept and the thought process behind the place which can be related to the case study of the multi-ethnic city of Gloucester. The level of detail and consideration that has been put really connects on a deeper level with the people that will be in contact with the place, creating an intimate connection.
The red square is the initial part of the site, dominated by a red, orange and bright pink colour palette. This space offers seatings, a large area for circulation and recreation connected to the remaining two parts by a long pedestrian and bike route.
